Seven Things To Check Before You Sign A Foam Mould Order With Any Chinese Shop

Buyer's checklist — based on real audit notes, not brochure language

Anyone can build you an EPP mould. The hard part is building you one that will still pass dimensional inspection on shot 600,000. Use this list on your next RFQ, and you will avoid roughly 80% of the headaches I have seen in foam-tooling projects since 2018.

1. Written shot-life number on the PO. Verbal "500K no problem" is not a number. Ask for a written figure attached to the order, and ask what happens if the tool fails at shot 480,000.

1. Steel certificate and heat-treatment record. P20, 2738H, 718H all look the same on a drawing. The certificate and the hardness map (HRC 30–34 for P20) are what tells you the difference. A shop that cannot show you the file is a shop that will not honour a warranty claim.

1. Cooling channel layout in writing. For EPP at 110 s cycle, 12 mm Ø channels at 25 mm pitch are the minimum. If the cooling layout is left to "engineer to decide", you will get warpage.

1. Trial room capacity. Steam chest, pre-heater, drying hopper, and an operator who has done at least 50 T0 trials in the last 12 months. A shop with no in-house trial room will ship you an untested tool.

1. Venting strategy. Foam vents differently from injection plastic. Ask for a vent depth map, not a verbal "we vented it."

1. Checking fixture included. If the shop is not quoting a checking fixture alongside the tool, they have probably never seen the part on a production line.

1. Reference customers you can call. Tesla, BYD, SAIC-VW, CATL, Samsung, LG, Panasonic, Supor, Midea, Haier — these are the names that show up on the reference list of a serious foam mould shop. Call two of them.
