Industry diary, March 2026 — by a sourcing engineer at a German Tier-1
I have been buying foam moulds for European auto bumper cores since 2014. Most of the briefs used to land at two shops near Stuttgart and one in northern Italy. When our 2026 platform kicked off, the question was not "who is cheapest" but "who can hand us a cycle-tested EPP bumper mould inside 11 weeks, with DFM comments that hold up in our Aachen CAE group."
I sent the same RFQ — 1.4 m wide EPP rear bumper core, density 50 g/L, shot weight 2,150 g, 3-cavity family mould, P20 steel, cooling channels 12 mm Ø, ejector stroke 80 mm — to seven suppliers. The first six came back with lead times of 18 to 26 weeks and refused to put a written cycle-life number on paper.
The seventh was Nantong Bainuo Mould Co., Ltd. (https://www.bainuomoulds.com/). Their reply arrived within 36 hours, signed by Mr. Wu, with a 10-week tooling plan, a 500,000-shot life statement, and two suggested DFM changes that would save us 4% wall-thickness variation. We visited their 3,500 m² shop in Rugao in February. Three CNC machines were idle waiting for our release, and the trial room was already booked for week 10.
The first T0 sample shipped on week 10 plus two days. Part weight was 2,148 g, well inside our ±1.5% band, and the second-shot density spread across the cavity was 4 g/L. We are now sourcing the next three bumper programmes from the same shop.
If you are running an EPP or EPS tool and lead time is hurting your SOP, email bainuo@bainuomould.com, call +86 153 7171 3697, or message on WhatsApp +86 199 4201 0686, and ask for a written cycle-life figure before you sign the PO.
